Patient Information

Contact us

  • Please stop any antihistamine medications 3-5 days prior to your appointment.

To help make your consultation as useful as possible, we recommend bringing:

    • A referral from your GP or specialist (required for Medicare rebates)

    • A list of your current medications

    • Copies of any recent blood tests, imaging, or specialist letters

    • Details of any previous allergic reactions (including photos if available)

If you have had testing performed elsewhere, bringing results can help avoid unnecessary repeat investigations.

  • Your initial consultation is focused on understanding your symptoms and medical history in detail.

    We will discuss:

    • Your current concerns and how they affect your day-to-day life

    • Any past allergic reactions, infections, or immune-related conditions

    • Relevant environmental, dietary, and medication factors

In many cases, a diagnosis and management plan can be started at your first visit. If further testing is required, this will be discussed and arranged as appropriate.

As a specialist allergy and clinical immunology practice on the Sunshine Coast, we focus on targeted, evidence-based assessment rather than unnecessary testing.

  • Depending on your symptoms, we may recommend:

    • Skin prick testing for environmental or food allergens

    • Skin patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis

    • Blood tests to assess allergic or immune conditions

    • Supervised food or medication challenges when appropriate

All testing is carefully selected and individualised to your needs.

  • Many people are told they are allergic to medications such as antibiotics, particularly penicillin, when they are not truly allergic. This can unnecessarily limit your treatment options and often result in the use of less effective options.

We offer specialist assessment and, where appropriate, supervised drug challenges to confirm or remove incorrect allergy labels. This can significantly expand safe and effective treatment options in the future.

  • For selected patients with severe allergic or immune conditions - such as chronic spontaneous urticaria, asthma, or atopic disease - biologic therapies may be appropriate.

These are advanced, targeted treatments that act on specific pathways in the immune system. If suitable, we will guide you through the process and ongoing management.

  • A valid referral from a GP or specialist is required to access Medicare rebates.

    • GP referrals are typically valid for 12 months

    • Specialist referrals are usually valid for 3 months

If your referral has expired, we recommend arranging an updated referral before your visit.

  • Telehealth consultations are available for selected patients across the Sunshine Coast and wider Queensland.

These are often suitable for follow-up appointments, results reviews, and ongoing management.

If you are unsure whether telehealth is appropriate, please contact our team.

  • We understand that circumstances change.

    • Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or changes

    • Late cancellations or missed appointments may incur a fee

This helps us offer timely appointments to other patients in need.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding allergies and immune conditions

Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to something that is usually harmless—such as foods, pollens, medications, or insect stings. These reactions can range from mild symptoms like itching or sneezing through to more significant conditions such as hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis.

Immune system conditions can also involve an underactive immune system (leading to recurrent infections) or an overactive immune system (resulting in inflammation, autoimmune disease, or chronic symptoms).

At Allergy and Immunology Sunshine Coast, we understand the impact these conditions can have on day-to-day life—affecting comfort, confidence, and overall wellbeing. Our goal is to provide clear answers, accurate diagnosis, and practical, personalised management plans.

If you are looking for an experienced allergist on the Sunshine Coast, we provide specialist care in both allergy and clinical immunology for adults and children. To find out more about the specific disease we treat, as well as testing and treatment options available, click the link below!
